Suncoast has the largest percentage of students attaining mastery level in the Advanced Placement exam on Comparative Government and Politics of high school with 1000 students[1]. Suncoast offers a variety of academic extracurricular activities and enjoys success in competition at local, state, and national levels. Some activities include: First Priority, Mu Alpha Theta, JETS, SECME, TEAMS, Equations/Linguishtik/Social Studies Academic Games, Future Business Leaders of America, FFEA, Spanish Honor Society, Key Club community service, National Honor Society, Drama club, Hands Across the Campus (which holds a annual Heritage assembly that sucks), and the Speech and Debate Team. Athletics

In addition, Suncoast has had great success in athletics. It has produced several State Champions in both individual and team events. In 2004, the Girls Volleyball team reached the semifinals of the state tournament and proceeded to get creamed. In 2005, the Girls Soccer team lost in overtime in the state finals as usual. The Girls Basketball team narrowly lost in the state semifinals (see above). Suncoast's boys cross country team qualified for the state meet for 5 consecutive years from 1998-2002. The girls track team were state champions for 3 years in a row from 1999-2001. The swim team is also well regarded.


College

Suncoast graduates go on to attend both national and state colleges and universities: Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, The University of Chicago, Brandeis University,Harvey Mudd, Vanderbilt, MIT, CalTech, University of Florida, University of Miami, and University of Central Florida are among the more popular choices. Suncoast High's first year was marred by major riots that received national media coverage, with law enforcement using tear gas and helicopters to break up rock-throwing and fights between mobs of fl and white students.
Racial tensions remained high at the school over the next several years, and while there were no more riots on the scale of 1970-71, there was a gradual exodus of white students from Suncoast High as their families either enrolled them in private or parochial schools, or moved.
Suncoast's history of academic success and of a motivated and talented student body is often attributed to Carnes' intial ability (granted to her by the Palm Beach County School District) to choose her own faculty from schools around the county.
