Sundiver is the first book of David Brin's first uplift trilogy. Although set in the same universe as the rest of the other Uplift books, it is set a considerable amount of time before the other books and shares none of the same characters apart from the main character, Jacob Demwa. Demwa is mentioned as the mentor of Tom Orley and Gillian Baskin (some of the main characters of the series), though he never actually appears.
The book has been reissued in New York by Spectra Books in 1996 with ISBN 0553269828 .
The book follows the story of expeditions launched from Mercury into the Sun itself, and Jacob's attempts to find out what lies before the strange sequence of events that befall the expedition before it is too late.

Sundiver is the first installment in David Brin's classic Uplift Universe.
The Sundiver project was established by mankind before contact was made with the other sentient species of the universe, and is a shining example to the Skins.
Sundiver has now become the focus of all human-human, and human-alien tensions because it could prove that humans were either uplifted or not.
