Sunnyside is a city located in Yakima County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,905.

Sunnyside was officially incorporated on September 26, 1902.

Sunnyside is located at 46°19'15" North, 120°0'44" West (46.320798, -120.012232)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.4 km˛ (5.9 mi˛). 15.4 km˛ (5.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,905 people, 3,827 households, and 3,000 families residing in the city. The population density is 903.8/km˛ (2,340.4/mi˛). There are 4,070 housing units at an average density of 264.6/km˛ (685.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 42.61% White, 0.40% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 52.58% from other races, and 3.01% from two or more races. 73.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,827 households out of which 50.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.58 and the average family size is 4.02.


In the city the population is spread out with 38.1% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 14.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $27,583, and the median income for a family is $28,304. Males have a median income of $25,187 versus $25,779 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,366. 34.5% of the population and 29.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.2% of those under the age of 18 and 18.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
