Centuries ago, having become experts on magic, the Night Elves started to use it recklessly. This caught the attention of the Burning Legion, a demonic army which sought to bring destruction to all in its path. The lord of the Burning Legion Sargeras took control of the Night Elf Queen Azshara and her Highborne and prepared to open a portal for the Burning Legion to pass. They succeeded, portals opened and demons, led by Archimonde and Mannoroth, entered the mortal realm, killing all in their path. However, some Night Elves, led by Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind united with the Humans and the Orcs to fight their common enemy, the Legion. They fought with the demons and their corrupted kinsmen with the help of the dragons, the treants and Cenarius the demi-god . At last the battle raged on the citadel of Azshara, where the Highbourne attempted to conduct a ritual to let Sargeras pass. The Night elves stormed the citadel and prevented the spell's conclusion. The vortex deep within the lake exploded and the massive continent of Kalimdor was torn apart. Azshara and her Highborne were pulled in the sea, for thousands of years they would sleep, later becoming the serpentine Naga.
