The Super Cup (known under its sponsored name as the ScreenSport Super Cup) was a one-off football competition held in England in the 1985-86 season. It was intended as a replacement for the European competitions from which English clubs had been banned following the Heysel Stadium disaster.
The six clubs invited, and the European competitions they would have qualified for, were:
To generate a sufficient number of games, the teams played home and away in two groups of three, with the top four teams going through to the knockout stages. Liverpool and Everton won the semi-finals, but due to fixture congestion (the two clubs also contested that year's FA Cup Final), the Super Cup final was held over to September 1986. Liverpool finally won the trophy by a 7-2 aggregate score.
The competition was not a success, as it was felt to be an insufficient replacement for games against the best sides in Europe, and it has not been held since. Another similar competition launched the same season, the Full Members Cup, ran until 1992.
Football, amateur and professional, is perhaps the most popular spectator sport in the United States, attracting a total attendance of over 40 million and watched by many more millions on television each year.
Although professional football was played as early as 1895 in Pennsylvania, it was not until 1920 that national organization began, with the formation of the American Professional Football Association at Canton, Ohio.
Canadian football is similar to the U.S. game, but the Canadian field and end zone are larger, measuring 110 yd by 65 yd (100 m by 59 m) and 25 yd by 65 yd (23 m by 59 m), respectively.
The principal competitions in England are the FA Premiership, the Football League, the FA Cup, and the Football League Cup (both cup competitions are knockout events).

The UEFA CUP was established in 1955 as a tournament for European cities that sponsored international trade fairs, and the original name was the International Industries Fairs Inter-Cities Cup (or Fairs Cup).
