Encyclopedia > Superman: The Ride of Steel

Superman: The Ride of Steel is a roller coaster that exists in various versions at several of Six Flags amusement parks, including:

  • Six Flags New England, Agawam, Massachusetts
  • Six Flags America, Baltimore/Washington, D.C.
  • Six Flags Darien Lake, Darien Center, New York

The Six Flags New England ride was opened in 2000. It climbs over two hundred feet in the air and drops suddenly, giving riders over 70 MPH speeds, and over ten seconds of weightlessness. It was designed and manufactured by Intamin AG. The Six Flags Web site states that the ride is "ranked the number-one coaster on the planet by Park World magazine."

Accidents

A fatal accident occurred on the Six Flags Darien Lake ride in 1999.

Twenty-one people were injured on the Six Flags New England ride in 2001 when a coaster failed to stop at a loading platform and collided with the train in front of it.

A fatal accident occurred on the Six Flags New England ride in 2004 when a 230 pound (100 kg) man with cerebral palsy was permitted to board and, on the last turn of the ride, was thrown from his seat and killed; see Roller coaster: safety.
