Estrich grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts on Massachusetts' North Shore. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1974, and received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1977. In 1976, she was elected the first female president/editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review. Estrich served as a law clerk for Judge J.
