Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,156 km˛ (832 mi˛). 2,131 km˛ (823 mi˛) of it is land and 25 km˛ (10 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.15% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 42,238 people, 16,529 households, and 11,785 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km˛ (51/mi˛). There are 21,829 housing units at an average density of 10/km˛ (26/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.54% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 16,529 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.99.


In the county, the population is spread out with 25.50% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 25.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.
