Each year (since the new rules with less teams came) the 16 teams from Allsvenskan (the All Swedish League - first level of Swedish football) and the 14 teams of Superettan (the Super Division 1 - second level of Swedish football) together with 68 teams from lower (district) series play the Cup.

There are a number of districts in the Swedish football organisation, and each of theme recives a number of spots in the Swedish Cup, due to how many licensed players they have. For an example, Värmlands FF recives three spots and Västergötlands FF recives seven spots.
