 | According to the Svetambaras, the sacred literature preserved orally since Mahavira was systematized and written down by a council convened about the end of the 4th century BC, but it is generally agreed that it was not given its present shape until some 800 years later (ad 454 or 467). |
| The Svetambara canon (agama) consists of 45 texts: 11 Angas ("Parts")--a 12th, the Drstivada, is not extant--12 Upangas (subsidiary texts), 4 Mula-sutras (basic texts), 6 Cheda-sutras (concerned with discipline), 2 Culika-sutras (appendix texts), and 10 Prakirnakas (mixed, assorted texts). |
| The list of twenty-four Yaksa-Yaksi pairs was finalized in about eight-ninth century A. as found in Kahavali, Tiloyapannatti (4.934-39), and Pravacanasaroddhara (375-78) while their independent iconographic forms were standarized in c.11th - 12th century A. as mentioned in the Nirvankalika, the Trisastisalakapurusacaritra, the Pratisthasara-samgraha, Pratisthasaroddhara, the Pratisthatilaka and acaradinakara and a number of other texts. |

| 'Svetambara' means 'dressed in white' and 'Digambara' means 'dressed in the sky' (nude). |
| The Order considers Parsva a greater authority than Mahavira, and the Svetambara branch the more ancient and corrrect, since they where white, accept woman as equals and acknowledge a female in the list of 24 buddhas. |
| The nude Digambara sect probably originated from the followers of Gosala who was a companion of Mahavira. |
