The surname Kuznetsova (feminine form for Kuznetsov) has the -tsov, -tsova syllable accented in Russian. Family life
Kuznetsova was born in Leningrad.Kuznetsova has a powerful build and strong legs thanks to her parents. Her father Alexandr Kuznetsov has coached five Olympic and world cycling champions. Her father's protégés include her mother, Galina Tsareva, a six-time world champion and holder of 20 world records, and Svetlana’s brother, Nikolai Kuznetsov, a silver medalist at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Kuznetsova also tried out cycling in her early years, but it bored her. She focused on tennis instead and was sent to Spain when she was 13 years old for better training and coaching.Despite training in Barcelona the spanish tennis federation did not acknowledge her talent as a future champion or a possible top 10 player but she certainly proved her point and showed her talent when she became the first russian woman to win the US OPEN title in 2004 and reached world no 2 in 2007.Currently there is no spanish player in the top 20 wta rankings whereas there are five russian women in the top 10. Poised for a shot at the 2007 US Open At the US Open, second-seeded Maria Sharapova and fourth-seeded Kunznetsova were placed in the bottom half of the draw. Therefore, the two would have played in the semifinals had form held. However, because of Sharapova's loss in the third round to 30th seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, Kuznetsova as the highest seeded player remaining in the bottom half became favored to reach the final. Kuznetsova defeated Klara Zakopalova in the first round and French player Camille Pin in the second round 6–3, 4–6, 6–0. Kuznetsova then defeated Spanish player Anabel Medina Garrigues and Belarussian teen Victoria Azarenka in the next two rounds to advance to the quarterfinals. This was the first time she had advanced beyond the fourth round since she won the event in 2004. Kuznetsova then defeated Szavay in the quarterfinals and Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinals 3–6, 6–1, 6–1. Kuznetsova described the first set of that match as "embarrassing." In the final, Kuznetsova lost to Henin in straight sets, making numerous unforced errors. Nevertheless, her performance at the US Open caused her ranking to rise to a career-high World No. 2. Quotes ♦In an interview, world No.4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, known for being a fun and positive person, straightforwardly said that nobody has a chance against Serbia's Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic at this year's Roland Garros. "Interviewer: There are three players from Serbia here, you know. Can you see any of them as a winner of Roland Garros?" "Kuznetsova: Yes, definitely. Ivanovic or Jankovic going to win. We are losers". ♦Not many players have anything negative to say about kuznetsova and when asked about it in an interview Kuznetsova said: "First thing for me is be a good person before being a good player, you know. I don’t know. I just love to have fun. I’m just happy to live. You know, life is short and you have to enjoy. I make jokes with every girl. I don’t know, I just feel friendly with everybody". ♦After losing to Safina in 2008 French open Kuznetsova said in her post-match interview: "Pretty horrible ... I felt like I could not give her fight because I was fighting first against myself". ♦During French open 2007 Roger Federer picked Kuznetsova as the favorite to win the title because he liked her game and her reaction was: "The Russian press told me and I thought 'No, it was a joke'. So I wanted to check it myself and read this on the Internet", "If I would have to choose a compliment from anybody, it's definitely the best I ever heard. Roger is a legend and to hear him say that is almost a dream", "It's unbelievable to hear my hero say this about my tennis.","If he likes my game, I would like to prove it more".
