Various examples of swarf, including a block of compressed swarf

Swarf (or turnings) is shavings and chippings of metal -- the debris or waste resulting from metalworking operations. It can usually be recycled, and this is the preferred method of disposal due to the environmental concerns regarding potential contamination with cutting fluid or tramp oil. The ideal way to remove these liquids is by the use of a centrifuge which will separate the fluids from the metal, allowing both to be reclaimed and prepared for further treatment. The chips are often extremely sharp, and this creates a safety problem, as they can cause severe injuries if not handled correctly. Depending on the composition of the material, it can persist in the environment for a long time before degrading. This, combined with the small size of some chips (e.g. those of brass or bronze), allows them to disperse widely by piggy-backing on soft materials and also to penetrate the skin as deep splinters. Definition A cut is an injury that results in a break or opening in the skin. ... Disposing of swarf is a tedious but necessary task. For ease of transport and handling, swarf may be compressed into bricks, which greatly reduces associated problems with storing and cost; it also improves material handling for all concerned with its reclamation and recycling.

Equipment for deoiling swarf resulting from machining operations - Patent 5284303 (2481 words)
This prevents the swarf which is already of a size suitable for sending to the centrifuge from being passed through the crushing rollers unnecessarily, thus ensuring better continuity of transportation to the deoiling centrifuge and hence, in short, enabling the machine to operate at a more uniform rate.
The swarf to be deoiled is introduced into the hopper 4 and is then transferred continuously to the crushing rollers 13 by the upper conveyor pass 5 of the feeder 6.
The crushed swarf and any foreign bodies present therein are then transferred continuously by the return pass 15 to the discharge region 17 of the feeder 6 and thence into the structure 27 of the conveyor 23.
Swarf and Misnomer (1027 words)
rather create the impression that the Swarf are randomly throwing generic terms at the wall in the vague hope that one of them might stick.
Paradoxically, having gone to the trouble of de-gothing the band description, Swarf seem to have made up for it by putting together an on-stage image which is distinctly...gothic.
The crowd is subdued, uncertain, waiting for Swarf to stomp on the 'uplifting' pedal and get their groove on.
