Jump to: navigation, search

A swell, in the context of an ocean, is a formation of long wavelength waves in the surface of the sea. Jump to: navigation, search The worlds oceans as seen from the South Pole Ocean (from Okeanos, a Greek god of sea and water; Greek ωκεανός) covers almost three quarters (71%) of the surface of the Earth, and nearly half of the worlds marine waters are over 3000 m deep. ...

Swells are far more stable in their directions and frequency than normal oceanic waves since they are formed by tropical storms and by stable wind systems.

Since they are mixed with normal sea waves they can be difficult to detect. From a signal analysis POV swells can be thought of as being a fairly regular wave signal with strong noise (waves) added.

They were used by polynesians to maintain course when no other clues where available, for example, in foggy days.
