Overview

At the present time 2007 a southward extension, now being built, will bring the line into the western outskirts of Swindon in Mouldon Hill Country Park. A further extension is being built beyond Hayes Knoll to South Meadow Lane which will give the the line an additional half mile towards Cricklade. The summer season of steam railway rides on the Swindon and Cricklade Railway was launched on 25 March when Swindon's Mayor coun.
Owned by the Southall Railway Group, which paid for the restoration, the engine made its running trials at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway and is now on the Bodmin steam railway until September.
The Swindon and Cricklade Railway is open for Days Out with Thomas on 20 and 21 May and a Teddy Bears Picnic on Sunday 18 June.
Swindon/Cricklade Rail (630 words)
At the Grouping of the railways in 1923 the line became part of the Great Western Railway, and subsequently part of the Western Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948.
Following interest expressed through the local press the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Society was formed in 1978 with the objective of restoring part of the railway (from West Swindon to Cricklade, and possibly onwards to the Cotswold Water Park) for recreational and educational purposes.
A lease of the trackbed was obtained from Swindon Borough Council and a base established at the site of the former Blunsdon Station, which had seen its last passenger train in 1924 and closed completely in 1937.
