§9. Sword-dance. II. Secular Influences on the Early English Drama. Vol. 5. The Drama to 1642, Part One. The ... (409 words)
This dance seems to have had its ritual origin in the primitive expulsion of Death or Winter, the death and resurrection of Summer, or in that conflict between Winter and Summer which, on the literary side, was also the origin of many débats and estrifs.
Its chief personages are the fool, who wears the skin of a fox or some other animal, and the “Bessy,” a man dressed in woman’s clothes—figures in which folk-lore finds the survival of the ritual of agricultural worship.
Amid a bewildering variety of nomenclature and detail, the invariable incident of the death and restoration to life of one of the characters is the point upon which has been based the descent of this play from pagan festivals celebrating the death and resurrection of the year.
Long Sword dance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (244 words)
It is related to the rapper sword dance of Northumbria, but the character is fundamentally different as it uses rigid metal or wooden swords, rather than the flexible spring steel rappers used by its northern relation.
Although Long Sword dances are found scattered all over Yorkshire, there are particular concentrations of dances in East Cleveland, the northern part of the North York Moors and around Sheffield.
Long Sword dances vary in the way they are performed, with some being slow and militaristic, such as the Grenoside or Handsworth dances from near Sheffield, while others are quicker.
