Encyclopedia > Synchromesh

Synchromesh is the term used to describe a manual transmission in which gears are brought to the same speed during shifting by a synchronizer. These transmissions became common in the 1960s, replacing in passenger cars the older-style unsynchronized transmissions which required the use of a technique called double declutching and other formidable driver skills to be effectively used.

Synchromesh transmission suited for use as an automotive automatic transmission - Patent 4823628 (2893 words)
A countershaft synchromesh type transmission is arranged to have first and second groups of input and output gear arranged on either side of a set of input and output gears which produce a given speed ratio.
In a previously proposed synchromesh type transmission disclosed in "Automotive Engineering" June 1980 pages 87 and 88 (hereby incorporated by reference), it has been possible to perform so called "hot shifts" between gears by setting synchronizers and selectively engaging and disengaging first and second clutches.
The present invention accordingly features a countershaft synchromesh type transmission which is arranged to have first and second groups of input and output gears arranged on either side of a given selected set of input and output gears which produce a given speed ratio.
Stealth 316 - Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid (453 words)
Pennzoil-Quaker State Synchromesh is a unique transmission and transaxle fluid that is not API "GL" rated.
A post on the message board at www.oilanalysis.com found Synchromesh to consist of a 5W30 non-detergent oil with a friction modifer and an EP (extreme pressure) additive.
According to Don Johnson, Synchromesh fluid was developed for use in the New Venture manual transmission used by Chrysler and General Motors.
