A television presenter is a British term for a celebrity who is best known for introducing or appearing in television programmes. They will often be known for this alone and have no particular expertise. A television presenter may double as an actor, singer, etc, but is normally known to the public only as the presenter of a particular programme or programmes. Exceptions include many presenters of political or scientific programmes who often are professionals in the relevant field.
In the USA, such a person is typically called a host or an emcee.
A museum or university, for example, may be the presenter or host of an exhibit.
In movies, a presenter (but not a host) is a usually well-known executive producer credited with introducing a film or filmmaker to a larger audience.
Some presenters may double as an actor, model, singer, etc. Others may be subject matter experts, such as scientists or politicians, serving as presenters for a programme about their field of expertise.
Shaima Rezayee, a former television presenter for Tolo TV in Afghanistan, was shot and killed in her home in Kabul on 18 May 2005, reported the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
Police have not confirmed whether Rezayee's murder was related to her work as a TVpresenter.
Tolo TV came under pressure on 13 March after a government panel of religious scholars known as the Ulema Council condemned the channel for broadcasting programmes "against Islam and other national values of Afghanistan." Rezayee lost her job soon after.
