As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 22,613 and the density of 514.87 persons per km². The total area is 43.92 km².

Miyazaki Prefecture is located on the eastern coast of the island of Kyushu.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Takajo, Takazaki, Yamada and Yamanokuchi from Kitamorokata District merged with the city of Miyakonojo to form the new city of Miyakonojo.
On January 1, 2006 the towns of Tano and Sadowara from Miyazaki District and the town of Takaoka from Higashimorokata District merged into the city of Miyazaki.
