Misawa was initially high on both Takayama and Omori as singles wrestlers. In a pair of moves that were considered to be suspect at the time, Misawa booked Omori into the finals of All Japan's 2000 Champion Carnival tournament (highlighted by Omori's seven-second, first-round victory over tournament favorite Jun Akiyama), and then booked Takayama into the finals of the 2001 tournament to crown the first-ever GHC Champion. For an undisclosed reason, Omori called for an early ending to his singles bout with Shinya Hashimoto in the middle of their match at Noah's 2000 Great Voyage show - the company's most important event up until that point. This left Omori in Misawa's doghouse, and after the NO FEAR team broke up so Takayama could pursue mixed martial arts matches, Ōmori was sent abroad, to Harley Race's World League Wrestling promotion in the American Midwest, and won the heavyweight title there. Nevertheless, Misawa kept denying that Ōmori had been sent abroad by NOAH, and by the time Ōmori came back, the door there for him was closed. He joined World Japan, where he feuded with Riki Chōshū, Genichiro Tenryu, and Kensuke Sasaki.
