Talwar with sheath

A talwar, talwaar, or tulwar (Devanagari: तलवार) is a type of Islamic sword prevalent in medieval India dating back to at least the 13th century. It bears a resemblance to the Persian shamshir and the Turkish kilic. The difference is that the blade of a talwar is wider than the blade of a shamshir. The blades and hilts of the talwar were often very ornate and featured carvings or gilding. Over time, it became a predominantly Rajput weapon while the Mughals relied on the Shamshir. The town of Sirohi in southern Rajasthan produced the lightest blade among talwars. Due to its growing popularity in Mughal India, the talwar was also produced in 19th Century Afghanistan in form of the "Afghani talwar," or pulwar.
