Tanaka Gi'ichi (田中 義一 Tanaka Gi'ichi February 5, 1866November 20, 1949) was a Japanese politician and the 26th Prime Minister of Japan from April 20, 1927 to July 2, 1929.


He was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Tanaka, with influence from Mori and his cohorts, announces new interventionist policies concerning Manchuria and Mongolia.
Within the next year, thanks to the machinations of Mori and the Kwantung Army, Tanaka would be forced to resign after the Kantogun attempts to formulate a crisis and seize Manchuria.
In 1931, China claimed him publicly to be the author of the 1927 "Tanaka Memorial" Imperialist Conquest Plan, advocating the conquest of Manchuria, Mongolia, and eventually the whole of China.

Giichi Tanaka[gE-E´chE tA´nAkA] Pronunciation Key, 1863–1929, Japanese statesman and general.
He is famous as the alleged author of the so-called Tanaka Memorial (1927), purporting to set forth Japan's plans for foreign conquest.
The downfall of Tanaka was hastened by his failure to control army extremists who assassinated the Manchurian warlord Chang Tso-lin, and by the charge that signing the Kellogg-Briand Pact "in the name of the people" infringed the sovereignty of the emperor.
