This island is celebrated as the place where Mendes Pinto landed when he found his way to Japan in 1543. Until modern times firearms were colloquially known in Japan as "Tanega-shima," due to the belief that they were introduced by Pinto. In fact, Pinto was probably not present at the first Portuguese contact with the Japanese, although he did visit Tanegashima soon after and legend says he did marry a local woman and had a son. It's largely coincidence that Tanegashima, now the heart of Japan's cutting edge ballistics research, was the first place firearms were introduced to Japan centuries ago.
Tanegashima was chosen as the site for Japan's space center because there are no tall mountains to disrupt wind or weather patterns and because it has an empty sea to its east, where spent rockets can tumble.
Decades ago, Tanegashima was also the closest Japanese territory to the equator, a prerequisite for launching geostationary satellites.
