Encyclopedia > Tank Stream

Tank Stream empties in Sydney Cove in New South Wales, Australia. It originates in western Hyde Park. At high tide, it entered Sydney Cove between Bridge Street and Pitt Streets. The catchment was 65 hectares, corresponding to Sydney central business district. During a 1790 drought, the three tanks giving its name were cut in sandstone beside it. Following construction, the stream ran underground. Some would like to see it run above ground again. [1] Image File history File links Unbalanced_scales. ... Excavations around Tank Stream uncover aborigine flake stone artefacts made from water-worn pebbles. The stream gave them water, fish and other resources.[citation needed]

When colonized, the area was chosen for similar reasons. The New South Wales colony was planned in 1788 for Botany Bay, but there was no fresh water (among other problems). This led Governor Arthur Phillip to seek a better site in Port Jackson. Sydney Cove was chosen because it had 'the finest spring of water'. On January 26, 1788 the new colony was inaugurated. Tank Stream could not meet the needs of the growing colony. It was abandoned in 1826, though little more than an open sewer for the preceding two decades.[citation needed] Sydney's next supply of water was Busby's Bore, in 1830. Busbys Bore was Sydneys second water supply. ...

In 1850, the swamp feeding the Tank Stream was drained. Starting in 1860, the Tank Stream was progressively covered and is now a storm water channel. Parts of the Tank Stream exist today under Sydney's streets[vague], controlled by Sydney Water CBD.

Tank Stream tours are run by the Historic Houses Trust and Sydney Water. These are usually in April and November. The tickets are limited, doled by ballot. There's an information centre behind locked gates at the beginning of the tour. One can also trace the previous stream course following art work, street names, and pub names.[2]
