A little further afield (15km west of Boyne/Tannum) is Lake Awoonga. The recreation area continues to draw visitors from all over Australia, with free barbecues, swimming, landscaped walking trails, as well as a cafe and caravan park. The lake has been stocked with several fish species since 1996, and over 2 million barramundi have been released, with the largest caught at the end of 2004 weighing in at a hefty 29.8kg. In addition to the fishing, Lake Awoonga has many wonderful natural attractions, especially the wildlife. With around 200 species of birds (or 25% of Australia's bird species) found in the region, Boyne Island is also home to the Boyne Tannum Hookup. A large fishing event held on the Queens Birthday long weekend. The event is held at Bray Park, which is on the river near the skatepark. This event is very popular with more than 3,000 entrants entering into it. It has more than $150,000 of prizes and giveaways. Boyne-Tannum has a strong sporting community with competitions such as the Sportspower Cup, the Toyworld cup (soccer), Rugby League competitions as well as Australian Rules Football, Cricket and Hockey competitions.
