Tarija is a city in southern Bolivia, located 22.73° South 64.35°West. It was named after Francisco de Tarija. The city was founded in 1574. It has a population of about 140,000.
Tarija is also a department in Bolivia. It is located in southern Bolivia bordering Argentina. According to the 2001 census, it has a popultation of 391,226 inhabitants. It has an area of 37.623 km². The city of Tarija is the capital of the department.
Tarija was founded on July 4th, 1574 as Villa de San Bernardo de Tarija by Don Luis de Fuentes y Vargas under the orders of Viceroy Don Francisco de Toledo.
Later on, Argentina was keen to annex the agriculturally favorable area, but Tarija opted to become part of Bolivia which won its independence and formally established as a Republic in 1825.
Tarija is well-known for its Mediterranean-like climate and vineyards.
