Towards the start of the nineteenth century, settlements displaying a significant growth in population were reorganized.
The area around Celaya contained Salamanca and Salvatierra, Apaseo, Chamacuero, Tarimoro, Santiago Maravatio, Acambaro, Tarandacuao, Coroneo and Jerecuaro.
Guanajuato was rich in artesans - shoemakers, carpenters, bakers, flsmiths, etc., but for sheer craftsmanship, none could compete with the Purepecha communities reorganized by Vasco de Quiroga.
