Tarkin is based on 3-D wavelet compression. A block of video has three dimensions, two spatial and one temporal, and is encoded as a unit with a 3-D discrete wavelet transform. This is in stark contrast to the more traditional method used in Theora and most other video codecs of doing a 2-D discrete cosine transform on single frames of video and doing inter-frame differences and perhaps motion compensation in a separate step. :For other senses of this word, see dimension (disambiguation). ... Wavelet compression is a form of data compression well suited for image compression (sometimes also video compression and audio compression). ... In numerical analysis and functional analysis, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) refers to wavelet transforms for which the wavelets are discretely sampled. ... 2-D DCT compared to the DFT The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is a Fourier-related transform similar to the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), but using only real numbers. ...
