Tattnall County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 22,305. The county's county seat is Reidsville, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,264 km˛ (488 mi˛). 1,253 km˛ (484 mi˛) of it is land and 12 km˛ (5 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.93% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,305 people, 7,057 households, and 4,876 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km˛ (46/mi˛). There are 8,578 housing units at an average density of 7/km˛ (18/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 60.51% White, 31.43% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 6.64% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 8.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,057 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.10% are married couples living together, 13.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 26.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 11.20% from 18 to 24, 34.60% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 136.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 146.30 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $28,664, and the median income for a family is $35,951. Males have a median income of $28,994 versus $19,984 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,439. 23.90% of the population and 18.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.90% of those under the age of 18 and 20.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
