Tatu came to the United States after playing with São Paulo in 1981. He started with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. In 1984, Tatu moved to the Dallas Sidekicks, where he played until 2003. The Dallas Sidekicks were one of the longest operating professional soccer teams in the United States, based in Dallas, Texas, and operating from 1984 until suspending operations following the 2004 season.
The team was founded as a member of the originial Major Indoor Soccer League.
The team's most famous player was Tatu, who was known for throwing his shirt into the stands after every goal.

The No. 2 scorer in indoor soccer history, a four-time league champion and the only man to win coach- and player-of-the-year honors in the same year is part of a Sidekicks team that's at the bottom of the Major Indoor Soccer League standings.
Tatu's frustration has been obvious to nearly everyone as he's often berated his much younger teammates and struggled to summon the energy necessary for his fifth year as a player and head coach.
Tatu was reluctant at first – players in Brazil would never do such a thing – but he eventually relented after team officials kept pestering him as attendance figures continued to fall.
