Encyclopedia > Tauris

Tauris is a peninsula on the Black Sea. In ancient times, it was part of Scythia and today is part of Crimea.

According to Greek legends, Tauris is the place to which Iphigeneia was sent after Artemis rescued her from the human sacrifice her father was about to perform. The goddess swept the young princess off to Tauris where she became a priestess at the temple of Artemis. Here, she was forced by the Taurian king Thoas to perform human sacrifices on any foreigners who came ashore. (See the plot of Iphigeneia in Tauris for more details.)

The land of Tauris and its rumored customs of killing Greeks are also described by Herodotus in his histories, Book IV, 99-100 and 103.

Tauri at AllExperts (447 words)
The Tauri eventually advanced to a state almost exactly like that of present-day, rediscovered the stargate and the truth: The galaxy is populated with the ancient peoples of Earth and the Tauri may be their only hope of eventual freedom from the Goa'uld.
Some members of the Tauri possess genetic markers unique to the Ancients that allow them to use Ancient technology, possibly as a result of interbreeding with a group of Ancients that returned to Earth ten thousand years ago from their city Atlantis.
The Asgard Thor once described the Tauri as being well on their way to becoming the "fifth race", a reference to the alliance of four great races of which both the Asgard and Ancients were members.

T Tauri is the prototype for a class of very young stars, still in the process of gravitational contraction; that is, they have yet to evolve to reach the main sequence.
Thus, T Tauri stars are a transitional phase between the IR sources indicating proto-stars which are still shrouded in dust, and stars newly arriving at the main sequence.
