"Tavisupleba" succeeds the old anthem Dideba zetsit kurtheuls, adopted after Georgia's independence from the Soviet Union. The lyrics are by Davit Maghradze (დავით მაღრაძე), music by Zakaria Paliashvili (ზაქარია ფალიაშვილი). The music and lyrics were adapted into an anthem by Ioseb Kechakmadze (იოსებ კეჭაყმაძე).
