Taylor is an English surname, originally an occupational surname meaning "tailor". [1] Taylor has also been commonly used as a given name in English-speaking countries. Like most such surnames turned into given names, it was originally used for males, but since the late 1970s is has also been commonly used as a female given name. [2]


According to the UK National Trust surname profiler Ref, It is the 5th most common surname in Great Britain. There were 236,123 Taylors in Britain in 1998 ref, a rate of 6,339 per Million. Australia had a rate of 5,197 Taylors per million inhabitants, New Zealand 6,207, Canada 4,180 and USA 4652. This name is however rare in Ireland with a rate of only 77.16 per million.
