Taylorsville is a town located in Smith County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,341.


Geography

Taylorsville is located at 31°49'48" North, 89°25'49" West (31.830046, -89.430343)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.5 km˛ (3.7 mi˛). 9.5 km˛ (3.7 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,341 people, 534 households, and 375 families residing in the town. The population density is 140.7/km˛ (364.3/mi˛). There are 598 housing units at an average density of 62.7/km˛ (162.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 81.58% White, 17.75% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.30% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 534 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.6% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $28,563, and the median income for a family is $38,958. Males have a median income of $30,776 versus $20,096 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,202. 16.1% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
