Encyclopedia > Ted Ray

Ted Ray (1905-1977) (real name Charles Olden) was a popular British comedian of the 1950s and 1960s.

He was born in Wigan, Lancashire, and began his career in music hall. Besides his comedy act, he was a talented violinist. Shortly after the Second World War, he appeared with Henry Hall and his band. He went on to have his own television show, and also acted as compere on variety and game shows. Two of Ray's sons followed him into show business: actor Andrew Ray, and the better-known Robin Ray, a musician and presenter.

Robin Ray (1935 - November 28, 1998) was an actor, musician and broadcaster, the son of comedian Ted Ray.
Ray's claim to fame was his ability to recognise pieces of piano music and name not only the piece and the composer but also the opus number.
In the early 1990s, he was one of the founders of the commercial classical music radio station, Classic FM, with which he remained associated until his untimely death.
Ray's a Laugh (365 words)
Ray's a Laugh did not actually include Nedlo's name among the credits, nor indeed that of Charlie Olden (his real name).
Nedlo/Olden was, by 1949, calling himself Ted Ray - and that was how he billed himself for his new radio series.
Ray's a Laugh was, in the main, a domestic comedy.
