Teddy Atlas trained for a year with legendary trainer Cus D'Amato, winning a couple of amateur bouts, but quit fighting before and was made a trainer by Cus D'Amato when it became obvious he would not be a good pro. He began his career as a trainer under the legendary Cus D'Amato, who trained Floyd Patterson and a young Mike Tyson. In 1982, When Tyson was 15 years old, Atlas threatened him with a gun to the head after Tyson allegedly had groped and made obscene statements to Atlas' 14-year-old sister-in-law, consequently D'Amato kicked the 26 year old Atlas out of his place. Atlas told reporters that Michael Spinks would beat Tyson due to Tyson's fears, but Tyson scored a first round knockout over Spinks.
