Hanlin held a grudge against Jack Bauer after Bauer arrested his partner, Seth Campbell, for taking bribes. Hanlin never forgave Bauer for this. During an operation to capture a suspect, Hanlin taunted Jack by telling him of how Campbell's wife killed herself. Not trusting Bauer, Hanlin shot the suspect, Alan Morgan in the leg, making him fall off over a banister, killing him.
