Tegernsee is a lake and spa town in Bavaria, Germany. It lies within the Miesbach district about 50km south of Munich and within the Bavarian Alps. Tyrol and Austria are about 20km. For the beauty of its Alpine landscape and rich history Tegernsee town and the area around the lake is a major tourist attraction with various spa and sport facilities for both summer and winter. As of the 2004 census Tegernsee town has a population of 5,000, the whole Tegernsee lake valley a population of 32,000. Tegernsee Monastery was founded in 746 AD by Benedict monks and had substantial influence on development of Southern Bavaria. In 1803 the monastery became Summer Residence for the Royal Bavarian Wittelsbach family and with this brought court life and visitors to the lake.
