Teller County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 20,555. The county seat is Cripple Creek.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,448 km˛ (559 mi˛). 1,443 km˛ (557 mi˛) of it is land and 5 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.34% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,555 people, 7,993 households, and 5,922 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km˛ (37/mi˛). There are 10,362 housing units at an average density of 7/km˛ (19/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.92% White, 0.55% Black or African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 2.00% from two or more races. 3.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 7,993 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.20% are married couples living together, 6.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 19.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.94.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 31.20% from 25 to 44, 29.80% from 45 to 64, and 7.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 102.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.90 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $50,165, and the median income for a family is $57,071. Males have a median income of $37,194 versus $26,934 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,412. 5.40% of the population and 3.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.90% of those under the age of 18 and 4.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Teller County begins 20 miles West of Colorado Springs and is accessed via State Highway 24 West.
Teller County is named after one of Colorado's first U.S. Senators, Henry Teller, and was formed on March 23, 1899.
Teller County was formed from the western portion of El Paso and the northern portion of Fremont counties and officially became a County on March 23rd, 1899.
