Signing after playing one season for Erandio, he became a prolific goalscorer for Athletic and won the Pichichi award for top-scorer six times. He scored more goals (230) than any other player in Spanish football history. He also holds the record for most goals in a season, when he scored 38 times in 1950-51.
Despite this excellent record, he only played for the Spanish national side twenty times. Even so, he still managed to score 20 goals, including four in one historic match when Spain beat Switzerland 6-3 on February 18, 1951.
After leaving Athletic in 1955, he played for one year with Indauchu and another with Baracaldo before retiring.
Spanish football is in mourning today after the death of former Athletic Club Bilbao and Spain forward TelmoZarraonandiaMontoya at the age of 85.
Zarraonandia, or Zarra, is best remembered for scoring four goals at the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, including the winner in a 1-0 group-stage victory against England at the Maracana.
Across Spain, the football world united in expressing their loss at not only a great player, who scored 20 goals in 20 internationals, but a great man. "I can't believe Telmo has left us, so I would rather say he will always be among us," said Athletic president Javier Lamikiz.
