A new version of TELUS was formed in January 1999 via the merger of General Telephone and Electronics subsidiary BC Tel, the former monopoly telecommunications service provider in British Columbia, and the "Alberta only" version of Telus.
TELUS' labour dispute with the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) began shortly after the previous contract (which was negotiated with BC Tel, rather than TELUS, before the two merged) expired at the end of 2000.
TELUS originally placed responsibility for the line cuts on the TWU; the union, in turn, blamed the problem on criminals seeking high-grade copper contained within telecommunication cables, which often fetches a high price on the fl market.
TELUS has shown company-wide commitment and participation: TELUS' environmental strategy is part of all TELUS team members' work lives, from quarterly environmental risk and performance reports, to constant training with more than 6,000 environmental courses completed in 2003, to a unique online environmental database identifying risks, inventories and data sheets on approximately 3,200 sites.
TELUS was a key player in the development of the Communications Environmental Excellence Initiative, a North American telecommunications industry collective committed to improving the sector's environmental accountability.
TELUS is an Imagine Caring Company, a designation of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy for companies that donate at least one per cent of their pre-tax profits to charitable and non-profit organizations.
