Encyclopedia > Temporal lobes

The temporal lobe is part of the cerebrum. It lies at the side of the brain, beneath the lateral or Sylvian fissure. Seen in profile, the human brain looks something like a boxing glove. The temporal lobe is where the thumb would be. For other articles about other subjects named brain see brain (disambiguation). ... In the anatomy of animals, the brain, or encephalon, is the supervisory center of the nervous system. ... Lateral sulcus The lateral sulcus (also called Sylvian fissure or lateral fissure) is one of the most prominent structures of the human brain. ... The human brain is the center of the central nervous system in humans and the primary control center for the peripheral nervous system. ...

Behind (posterior to) the temporal lobe is the occipital lobe, where visual information first reaches the cortex. Above and to the rear is the parietal lobe. The temporal lobe encloses the hippocampus and amygdala. The occipital lobes are the visual processing center of mammalian brains. ... The parietal lobe is a lobe in the brain. ... The location of the hippocampus in the human brain. ... Location of the amygdala in the human brain Located in the brains medial temporal lobe, the almond-shaped amygdala (in Latin, corpus amygdaloideum) is believed to play a key role in the emotions. ...

Function

The top (superior or dorsal) part of the temporal lobe includes an area (within the Sylvian fissure) where auditory signals from the cochlea (relayed via several subcortical nuclei) first reach the cerebral cortex. This part of the cortex (primary auditory cortex) is involved in hearing. Adjacent areas in the superior, posterior and lateral parts of the temporal lobe are involved in high-level auditory processing. In humans this includes speech, for which the left temporal lobe in particular seems to be specialized. Wernicke's area which spans the region between temporal and parietal lobes plays a key role (in tandem with Broca's area, which is in the frontal lobe). The functions of the left temporal lobe are not limited to low-level perception but extend to comprehension, naming, verbal memory and other language functions. Cross section of the cochlea. ... Location of the Cerebral cortex Slice of the Cerebral cortex, ca. ... Wernickes area is a part of the human brain which forms part of the cortex, on the left posterior section of the superior temporal gyrus, posterior to the primary auditory cortex, on the temporo-parietal junction (part of the brain where the temporal lobe and parietal lobe meet). ... Brocas area is the section of the human brain (in the opercular and triangular sections of the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe of the cortex) which is involved in language processing, speech production and comprehension. ...

The underside (ventral) part of the temporal cortex appears to be involved in high-level visual processing of complex stimuli such as faces (fusiform gyrus) and scenes (parahippocampal cortex). Anterior parts of this ventral stream for visual processing are involved in object perception and recognition. Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the face, particularly the human face. ... Please observe: the above picture was copied from this fantastic brain atlas The Fusiform gyrus is part of the temporal lobe. ... The primate visual system consists of about thirty areas of the cerebral cortex called the visual cortex. ...

The medial temporal lobe (near the sagittal plane that divides left and right cerebral hemispheres) is thought to be involved in episodic/declarative memory. Deep inside the medial temporal lobe, the hippocampus seems to be particularly important for memory function, and it also seems to play a part in controlling spatial behavior. Human brain viewed from above, showing cerebral hemispheres. ... Episodic memory, or autobiographical memory, is the explicit memory of events. ... Declarative memory is the aspect of memory that stores facts and events. ... The location of the hippocampus in the human brain. ...

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy is believed to be linked to near-death experiences, particular creativity in artists like Vincent van Gogh and similar euphoric and transcedent experiences. Epilepsy (often referred to as a seizure disorder) is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. ... Ascent in the Empyrean (Hieronymous Bosch) A near-death experience (NDE) is the perception reported by a person who nearly died or who was clinically dead and revived. ... Self-portrait (1886) Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch painter, generally considered one of the greatest painters in European art history. ...

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Temporal lobe seizure (1170 words)
Temporal lobe seizures can affect people of any age, and can occur as a single episode or can be repeated as part of a chronic (ongoing) condition.
Because the temporal lobe is involved in processing emotion and sensations, seizures in this area may begin with feelings of fear, feelings of joy (sometimes with religious associations and the sensation of a "presence"), recall of certain music, or smells and other unusual symptoms.
Diagnosis of temporal lobe seizure is suspected primarily on the basis of the symptoms presented and the results of testing.
