Life Teppei was exposed to music at a very early age. By the time he was five years old he had begun to play the piano, and continued up until about the third grade. Two or three years later he started listening to metal bands like Pantera and Megadeth. In seventh grade he had discovered what he described as the "simpler but equally moving" punk rock genre, with artists such as Minor Threat and Operation Ivy. His discovery of punk led him to play guitar an increasing amount, eventually leading to classical guitar lessons; though he says he remembers none of what he was taught. While skateboarding began to take up more of his life, Teppei slowly accumulated skill in rock guitar. When Thrice formed in 1998, he didn't even know how to play with a pick. Constantly moving, he says he hopes to continue to make music many years from now. Teppei uses a variety of guitars, amplifiers and effects pedals, claiming to be a self confessed gear nerd. His live guitar is mainly a 1985 Gibson Les Paul Custom with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge. For studio work, he mainly uses a wine red 1977 Gibson Les Paul Standard with DiMarzio pickups. He also has come to favor Fender Telecasters and owns two, both of which have become predominant in his live and studio work. He also was shown in the 2006 Fender Product Catalog with his Telecaster. He is currently using Marshall amplifiers and cabinets and Vox amplifiers, having previously used Mesa Boogie, Bogner, and Crate amplifiers. Teppei is also in a side project called Black Unicorn with his friend Chris Jones.
