Overview

Tetra Pak real innovation is in the area of aseptic liquid food packaging. Aseptic packaging combine with UHT processing allows liquid food to be packaged and store under ambient conditions for up to one year. This allows for otherwise food that is perishible to be saved and distributed over greater distances without a cool chain to more consumers.Tetra Pak's first product was a paper carton used for storing and transporting milk. The first product was a pyramid shaped package, today its called "Tetra Classic". Rausing had been working on the design since 1943, and by 1950 had perfected techniques for making his cartons fully airtight, using a system of plastic and aluminium coated paperboard combining with aseptic filling system that allow liquid food to be packaged in aseptic condition. These initial cartons were tetrahedrons having 4 sides, leading to the company's name, which means "four" in Greek. In 1952 The first Tetra Classic package was launched, and later in 1963 the company introduced Tetra Brik, a rectangular carton. Later Tetra Pak launched other packaging format - such as Tetra Wedge (wedge shaped), Tetra Fino (Pouch shaped) packaging. The Business

Tetra Pak was able to become one of the world largest and richest companies due to the unique packaging system they produce. Through patents, tie-in contract and innovative deals etc they lock customers into a system that, once they buy into the Tetra Pak packaging system, its is very difficult to leave. Its system of unique packaging system, is unique to the world, this means that end users have no alternative other to continue to buy packaging system consumerables from Tetra Pak.


Competitions

Until recently there are no alternative suppliers available to Tetra Pak, however in mid 2000, the Tetra Pak monopoly was broken in China.
