TetriNET is a multiplayer online Tetris game for up to six people, created by St0rmCat in 1997 that supports team play. The last official version is 1.13. St0rmCat later created TetriNET 2, which features improved graphics, more types of special blocks, additional features (such as hold piece and block shadows), and a master server. Tetris is widely known as the most popular computer puzzle game of all time [citation needed]. It was invented by Alexey Pazhitnov (last name transliterated Pajitnov by The Tetris Company [1]) in 1985, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow... Game play

TetriNET game play is like Tetris, with the addition of special blocks. After clearing rows, special blocks (sometimes called "specs" or "cookies") can appear in the player's field. When a row with special blocks in it is cleared, it is put in that player's inventory, and the player can use it on another player, or on himself. Special blocks have a variety of different effects, there are 9 types in TetriNET 1. A game with special blocks disabled is called a "pure" game. Many variants have been developed since the original TetriNET, like the 7tetris mode (do 7 tetris as fast as you can), the survival mode or the quick mode (clear as many lines as you can in a limited time).

TetriFast 1.13

TetriFast is a modified version of TetriNET that has the 1-second delay between pieces removed. The protocol is also changed to prevent it from being used on normal TetriNET servers.

TetriFast 1.14

TetriFast 1.14 is a variant of TetriFAST allowing the players to play with the same sequence of pieces.

Blocktrix

Blocktrix is an enhanced version backwards compatible with old versions of TetriNET. Blocktrix is a free, online, multiplayer, puzzle game based on TetriNET and was created in 2000 by strikelight. ...

Special Blocks

One of the unique features of TetriNET besides the online multiplayer is the ability to set a game to include "special blocks," which can be used to harm opponents' fields or aid allies' fields. A player gains these specials by making a line, which causes a random special to appear on his field. When the player makes another line which includes the special as a block, the special then moves to his inventory, where it is then able to be used by pressing a number corresponding to the field the player wants to use it on (1-6). The special blocks include:

  • a : Add Line - Adds one broken line to the bottom of the target field.
  • c : Clear Line - Clears the line on the bottom of the target field.
  • b :Clear Special Blocks - Causes all special blocks on the target field to return to normal blocks.
  • r : Random Blocks Clear - Random blocks are removed from the target field, often creating gaps in lines.
  • o : Block Bomb - Makes any Block Bombs on the target field to "explode", causing surrounding pieces to scatter throughout the field.
  • q : Blockquake - Causes blocks on each line on the target field to shift, creating an earthquake-like effect.
  • g :Block Gravity - Causes blocks on that target field to immediately fall into any gaps and instantly deletes any complete lines which are created.
  • s :Switch Fields - User and target switch fields.
  • n :Nuke Field - Removes all blocks from the target field.

Three new special blocks in Blocktrix mode (only supported by the Blocktrix client):

  • Left Gravity - Similar to gravity, but will leave the right-most column open.
  • Piece Change - Changes the current piece.
  • Zebra - Clears every second column of the field.

TetriNET 2 added some new specials:

  • Immunity - Target cannot be affected by any special for a default of 15 seconds.
  • Clear Column - Deletes a random column from the target field.
  • Mutate Pieces - A certain number of the target's next pieces (default 3) become large and awkwardly shaped.
  • Darkness - Target cannot see anything on his field besides the current piece and its immediate surroundings for a default of 10 seconds.
  • Confusion - Causes target's controls to "mix up" for a default of 10 seconds (for example, the key that normally moves the piece left may start moving the piece right instead.)
