Teutopolis is a village located in Effingham County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,559.


Geography

Teutopolis is located at 39°7'56" North, 88°28'42" West (39.132125, -88.478435)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,559 people, 537 households, and 397 families residing in the village. The population density is 381.0/km² (986.8/mi²). There are 563 housing units at an average density of 137.6/km² (356.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 99.81% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.06% from two or more races. 0.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 537 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.48.


In the village the population is spread out with 33.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.9 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $47,450, and the median income for a family is $55,461. Males have a median income of $33,661 versus $21,087 for females. The per capita income for the village is $21,280. 4.8% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

While Teutopolis was without a resident pastor, a number of priests came occasionally from the Diocese of Vincennes to administer to the most pressing spiritual needs of the settlement.
His place at Teutopolis was now filled by the Reverend Master of Novices, Damascus Ruesing, O.F.M., (December 1876.) He procured the new Stations of the Cross, the Christmas Crib (except the Three Kings) and began to erect the Boy's School east of the church.
He was to do great things at Teutopolis and his pastorate is one of the most remarkable of all in the annuals of the "Duetske Staadt." In fact Father Casimir was a typical Low German and it took a man of stubborn determination to accomplish what he achieved.
