Tha Doggfather was Snoop Dogg's follow up to his debut album Doggystyle, released by Death Row Records in 1996, under the name "Snoop Doggy Dogg" (his alias at that time). The album features Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, and Warren G, amongst others. Although the album debuted at number one in the week of November 12, 1996 with over 478,971 copies sold, it failed to match the commercial success of Doggystyle. Still worth to note that it was released only one week after another Death Row release, the first posthomous album by slain Tupac, the The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, which also debuted at number one. According to SoundScan, over two million copies have been sold[citation needed] with 800,000 copies in the UK alone by the end of 1996.[citation needed] Image File history File links Download high resolution version (781x768, 147 KB) Licensing This image is of a music album or single cover, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by either the publisher of the album or the artist(s) which produced the music or artwork in... Snoop Dogg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1795 words)
However, by the time Snoop's second album Tha Doggfather was released in November of 1996, both the furor and the popularity of gangsta rap had begun to fade, dragged down by the death of Snoop's friend Tupac Shakur and the racketeering indictment of Death Row co-founder Suge Knight.
Later that year he released the album Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$, which featured the hit singles and videos "From Da Chuuuch to Da Palace" and "Beautiful," featuring guest vocals by the Neptunes' Pharrell Williams.
A large number of Snoop Dogg's songs mention "the LBC." This is a reference to the city of Long Beach, California, or to the Long Beach Crips.
