Thaddeus was one of the Seventy Apostles of Christ, not to be confused with Thaddeus of the Twelve Apostles. Thaddeus of the Seventy (=Judas Jacobi?, or Judas Simon?) was born a Jew, in Edessa. According to Eusebius, it was he who instructed King Abgar in the Christian Faith and baptised him. After Pentecost, Thaddeus of the Seventy preached the Gospel in Mesopotamia, and was a martyr there, in the year 44 AD. The Seventy Apostles were disciples of Jesus sent out to preach among the cities of Judea, to heal the sick therein, and to cast out devils.
