Thane comprises of 13 talukas. The southern talukas are the location of urban areas and hence urban Indians while the western coastal region is mostly populated by Kolis, Marathis and Gujaratis. The northern and the eastern talukas are populated by the Warli tribes, known for making stark images from red mud on house walls.
Nashik and Ahmadnagar districts are to the east of Thanedistrict.
Raigad district is to the south and Pune district to the southeast Mumbai suburban district is to the southwest The Arabian is to the west, whereas Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli territory are to the north of this district.
The Sahyadri mountain is on the eastern boundary of the district.

The administrative of the district have undergone considerable changes due to frequent revision, for a variety of reason, such as split of the original North Konkan district, re-organisation of following the creation of the Maharashtra and the more recent expansion of the limits of Mumbai city.
The river of the district mainly belong to two river stream of the North Konkan, namely the Ulhas and Vaiterna, both draining the rainy western slopes of the Sahyadri that lie between the Bhor and the Thal Ghats.
