The 3rd and the Mortal (alternative spelling The Third and the Mortal) is a norwegian experimental heavy metal-band. They were one of the forerunners of the atmospheric metal scene ( but remaining in a cult/underground status) and the first one to have a leading female singer. Their first EP ' Sorrow' was relased in 1993 followed by 'Tears laid in earth'in 1994. Complex music which has a very dark and dense atmosphere enhanced by the gorgeous voice of Kari. After her departure in 1995 the band relased 'Painting on Glass' in 1996 and exploring even more exrimental sound (To get a clue, think of Dead Can Dance meets Pink Floyd with some jazz and metal influences ) and the exotic voice of Ann-marie.In 1997 'In this room' came out an very drum-driven album with a "hollow" sound (The Gathering's ' How to Measure a Planet?' (1998) reminds this drum sound a lot). Actually several bands nowdays use this kind of sound on their recordings. Dead Can Dance is a band that comprises Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. ... Pink Floyd circa 1971. ...
After an absence of 5 years, the band returned with 'Memoirs' an album with recordings made on the previous years. Using a lot of electronic sounds and modern touches.
Once again The 3rd and the Mortal paint a musical soundscape that touches the very soul.
The extremely atmospheric and dreamy doom-metal The 3rd and the Mortal make might not be everybody's cup of tea, some might find it to simply be to mellow, but most open minded fans will definately be in treat.
While some people say The 3rd and the Mortal lost their metal edge on the next album, 'In the Room', it is hard to discover any real metal parts on this one.
Their last album, In This Room, was released in 1997 and although the band set to work on another release a year or so afterwards, it has taken nearly five years for the album to reach fruition.
Thus, the vocals on this new album were handled by guests and alternate between pretty female singers and somewhat goth-oriented male vocalists.
Although the music of The Third & the Mortal has morphed considerably over time, there are no doubts about the band's continued ability to impress no matter what sound they are exploring.
