Song

The song "The Artist in the Ambulance" was inspired by a vignette in Al Burian's collection of zine printings, Burn Collector. The song analyzes the useful role of an artist in society by contrasting it to that of an emergency medical technician (EMT). The distinction is that the EMT literally and physically picks one off the ground whereas the artist can only figuratively and emotionally pick somebody up off the ground. The lyrics "Now I lay here owing my life to a stranger, and I realize that empty words are not enough" reference the EMT's job, whereas the chorus lyrics "I hope that I will never let you down/I know that this can be more than just flashing lights and sound" reference the artist's strength, however technically immaterial. Burn Collector is a zine written and published by Al Burian. ... The Star of Life, a global symbol for medical service EMTs loading an injured skier into an ambulance An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an emergency responder trained to provide emergency medical services to the critically ill and injured. ...

Alternate Mix

An alternate mix of the song can be found on an Island Records promotional disc. This version's lyrics are slightly different, and the mixing has different levels for the instruments and vocals.
